  1. dreamreal*sigh* https://github.com/nubjs/nub
  2. nevetGitHub - nubjs/nub: The fast all-in-one Node.js toolkit
  3. bluedreamreal: wth is THAT?
  4. bluechovy_: wb
  5. bluedreamreal: did you know Europa is estimated to contain twice the liquid water than Earth's?
  6. bluethe solar system is pretty amazing, and we gotta start harvesting it
  7. bluedreamreal: can't say I understand what nub brings to the table
  8. dreamreal"It's bun except for node! hee hee!"
  9. dreamrealWell, harvesting offworld water isn't trivial, but if you wanted to do it, you wouldn't go to europa, you'd go to the oort cloud
  10. dreamrealthat way you wouldn't be fighting gravity as well as inertia
  11. dreamrealAGH no the Kuiper Belt not the Oort Cloud
  12. dreamreal... 30 AU vs 2000 AU, slight difference
  13. bluedreamreal: oh yeah, I was going to say the oort cloud is pretty far as it were
  14. bluewell, it's *all* far as space distances go, the oort cloud obv isn't particularly far compared with, alpha centauri, which is in itself *pretty damn close* compared to andromeda
  15. dreamrealyeah. Saw "Project Hail Mary" yesterday, incidentally
  16. blueYES. and you read the book, yes?
  17. bluebecause ryan gosling is a TERRIBLE prick
  18. dreamrealI saw the movie
  19. dreamrealHaven't read the book
  20. blueoh. in that, you don't have a good baseline at all
  21. blueyou must read the book -- the book is phenomental. the movie is a joke compared to it
  22. bluephenomenal*
  23. bluethey cast a german -- a GERMAN - as Eva Stratt
  24. blueI have no idea how andy, who was on the production team, allowed this, but it was a terrible decision
  25. dreamrealWhat was she in the book?
  26. bluethe whole point of Eva Stratt's character is that she's typically -- almost mockingly in her rigidity and being a pain in the frigging butt -- dutch
  27. bluegermans are NOTHING like dutch. germans are pansies; they avoid conflicts, they dislike disagreement and seek conformism about all
  28. bluea ww2 heritage, if you like
  29. blueanyway, Stratt is *markedly* dutch
  30. blues/about all/above all/
  31. bluetake for example the scene of her singing
  32. bluethat is a made-up scene, it was never in the book, and it's *very* ooc
  33. dreamrealWell, it was trying to create drama for the betrayal
  34. dreamrealshe's supposed to be human, not purely utilitarian
  35. blueyeah, but the betrayal was not the point in the book
  36. bluethe point was really, that grace realises in the end, he was a coward
  37. bluethe fact he was forced is inconsequential, it only props the realisation of his true nature
  38. bluehe's a great scientist, but he's also a coward who NEEDED to be forced, to bring out the best in him
  39. blueand that's something there's no universe in which happy-go-luck ryan gosling can bring to life in a character
  40. dreamrealmaybe. I honestly resented the start of the movie.
  41. blueI resented almost all of it, gosling was a terrible pick
  42. blueI can't think of a worse actor for the job
  43. blueI mean, I dislike him in just about every role he does, but at least in feel good flicks like la la land, he didn't feel *that* out of place
  44. blueeven in barbie, his base idiocy is just about *ok* for a ken
  45. bluethe only reason I watched PHM, despite seeing the trailer and knowing it was him, was that I like rocky's character too much to pass on on that
  46. dreamrealI don't know enough about him, don't really pay attention
  47. dreamrealkeep getting him confused with ryan reynolds
  48. blueheh
  49. blueanyway, I recommend that you write that book. heck, give me an address and I'll *buy* it for you
  50. blues/write/read/
  51. bluebecause gifting someone this book is 100% a way to spread MORE light into the world!
  52. dreamrealI already own it, just have not read it yet
  53. dreamrealbut having seen the movie I want to write my own
  54. blueha
  55. dreamrealexcept I'm going to have first contact be realistic and a conflict of ontologies so everyone dies because nobody knows what the other person even IS, much less how they fit into their own society
  56. bluewell, it was definitely a disappointment compared to the martian
  57. dreamreal"I am a SCIENTIST" *by defining yourself you cast yourself as an opposition from what is, definitions are aggressive, firing photon torpedoes now*
  58. blueha
  59. bluethe thing I don't like about most first contacts in scifi, is that they're depicted from a very human perspective. by which I mean, they're *very* transactional, by which the alien species is also assumed to be transactional, which there's no universal reason it should be
  60. bluewar/conflict would also be filed under transactional
  61. bluefor example, a first contact could well be, that the aliens *completely* ignore us. because reasons. we could be ants to them; this wouldn't be *their* first contact
  62. dreamrealyeah, that's exactly it: our stories HAVE to use our ontology
  63. blueyes
  64. blueso the reality of the matter would not be that they have nothing to gain or lose from us, it would be that we're irrelevant on their level of existence
  65. bluewhich could be seen as the same, I suppose, but I'm using a human language to express an alien idea
  66. bluewhich I can't do properly, obv
  67. dreamrealWell, the problem prevents its own solution, sure
  68. dreamreala few authors have done well expressing alien epistemology from human perspectives, but not many
  69. blueit's probably hard, I imagine
  70. dreamrealGiven that the authors are human, yeah
  71. bluebut if we were an alien species which can startravel, if not galaxytravel, I don't know that the human race at its current development stage would be of much relevance to them
  72. bluegiven the *insane* level of tech progress you'd need to reasonably startravel
  73. blueeither you've broken physics, or you can live essentially forever
  74. blueboth of which are almost equally improbably
  75. blueimprobable*
